During Field School 3 of the MSCD Project we have been lucky enough to be given guest lectures by leading experts in Archaeology and Heritage from across Egypt. Dina is a construction engineer and expert in culture heritage and conservation. Her lecture was about UNESCO and the world heritage convention.
What did we learn?
UNESCO divides World Heritage Sites into natural and cultural properties, which represent different civilizations and tell the story of the world.
Do you know that Egypt has seven sites inscribed on the World Heritage list? There are six cultural sites and only one natural site. In addition there are 32 cultural and natural sites inscribed on the tentative list.

Dina Bakhoum gives a lecture to Field School 3
Fatma Keshk Lecture
Fatma is an Egyptologist and field archaeologist working on several archaeological sites in Egypt since 2008. Her lecture focused on the local communities who live alongside archaeological sites in Egypt “from Sinai to Aswan”. Find out more about Fatma and her publications here.
What did we learn?
We leaned how local communities are different according to their location, age, and level of knowledge.
We learned that we should study and understand the customs and traditions of a community before starting any project to know how to best to involve them.
She showed us some examples of heritage sites that are still in use by local communities, such as the Fatimid cemetery in Aswan. These provide us with a unique cultural, ritual and historical landscape.
She suggested that the local community should be involved when organizing events and activities at heritage sites. She showed us some case studies of when this has been done in Egypt such as through the Alathrlana and Naswaturath initiatives.

Dr. Tarek Tawfik Lecture
Dr Tarek Tawfik is the general supervisor of the Grand Egyptian Museum, his lecture focused on the development of this incredible museum.
What did we learn?
The new museum will be the best place to display objects relating to ancient Egyptian history and art. It will exhibit over 100,000 artifacts, with about 3500 of these belonging to the famous King Tutankhamen.
The main exhibition will have both a chronological and thematic arrangement. It will help the visitor connect with the past by grouping objects together and placing them in scenes that replicate ancient Egyptian life.
The museum will take factors such as the archaeological environmental and place of discovery into account and will create an interactive experience to engage visitors.
Dr. Hisham El Laithy Lecture
Dr Laithy is the General Director of the Egyptian Monuments Registration Center. His lecture focused on the role of the registration center and the Medinat Maadi project, a collaboration between the Italian Foreign Ministry and Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.
We did we learn?
The idea of establishing the registration center came after the international campaign to safeguard the Nubian monuments and Abu Simble temples in 1955.
The role of the registration center is to document and register all of the inscriptions and wall paintings on Egyptian monuments.
The Medinat Maadi project aimed to conserve and restore the old city temple and mud brick remains. It then established a park, visitor center, library, coffee shop and conference hall to help develop the site as a visitor attraction.
